Online Research Tools

Many of the online research tools provided in our collection are funded by the NJ State Library for the benefit of all NJ library members. The online research tools provide access to more than 25 different databases, most with full-text available.  You will need to provide your library card number to access these online research tools outside the library. Books and Literature

Novelist*:  comprehensive readers’ advisory solution for fiction lovers. With an intuitive interface and extensive proprietary content, NoveList answers the question: What should I read next?

Novelist K-8*: the resource young readers turn to when looking for the next book to read.

Library Newsletter Subscription: subscribe to receive the newsletters of your reading interest, each newsletter provides you with some of the newest titles in our collection by subject and also stayed tuned to upcoming events with our @ Your Library Newsletter delivered by e-mail monthly to your inbox.

Literary Reference Center*: a comprehensive database that provides users with a broad spectrum of information on thousands of authors and their works across literary disciplines and timeframes.

Business and Career

Business Source Elite*: provides full text coverage for more than a thousand journals covering scholarly business, management and economics journals. This database is searchable in several different languages.

Job and Career Accelerator*: Create resumes and cover letters, learn interviewing techniques and prepare for related exams. Access millions of job listings.

Small Business Reference Center*: A comprehensive resource for small business owners and those interested in starting a business, offering full-text periodicals and reports, sample business plans, U.S. tax forms, videos and reference books.

Regional Business News*: Regional Business News incorporates coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States. This database is searchable in several different languages. Glass Door: Glassdoor holds a growing database of millions of company reviews, CEO approval ratings, salary reports, interview reviews and questions, benefits reviews, office photos and the latest jobs.

Magazines and Reference

MasterFILE Elite*: provides full text for more than 1,050 general reference publications, including Consumer Reports Magazine, the New York Times, U.S. News and World Report, with coverage dating as far back as 1984. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, MasterFILE Elite also includes 52 full text reference books and an Image Collection of over 502,000 photos, maps and flags.

Reference USA*: Provides detailed, current directory information on U.S. and Canadian businesses and residents and healthcare providers.

Learn a Language

Rosetta Stone Library Solutions Plus*: Learn a language with Rosetta Stone Library Solutions Plus.  It includes 30 languages to meet a range of cultural interests, core lessons to build reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, and focused activities to refine grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and more.

Teacher Resources

ERIC*: This database, Educational Resource Information Center , provides access to education literature and resources. This database is searchable in several different languages.

Teacher Reference Center*: Provides indexing and abstracts for hundreds of periodicals and peer-reviewed journals.

Government and Law

Government Information Online: A virtual reference (chat or email) service through which government librarians can help answer questions about government resources at the local or national level.

Library of Congress (THOMAS): This web resource is a clearinghouse of information regarding national legislation, Congressional activities, committees and records. The site also provides a nice set of materials for teachers.

Legal Information and Reference Center*: Provides exclusive online full text for many of the top consumer legal reference books.  Contains full-text publications and thousands of legal forms.


HeritageQuest : A comprehensive treasury of American genealogical sources— rich in unique primary sources, local and family histories, convenient research guides, interactive census maps, and more. With more than 4.4 billion records, and with coverage dating back to the 1700s— to help people find ancestors and discover a place’s past.

Library of Congress – American Memory: American Memory provides free access through the Internet to written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps, and sheet music that document the American experience.

NJ Digital Highway: This web portal provides is a digital repository for many items housed in museums and historical collections throughout the state of NJ. The collection contains a significant amount of primary resources related the history and culture of NJ.
